The Birth of a Dual Monarchy

Post by EaganTheMighty on Fri Aug 12, 2016 6:42 am

No one expected another dual monarchy to form after the fall of Austria Hungary, even more so in Western Europe. Nevertheless, the nations of the Netherlands and Denmark had united along with an occupied Northern Germany. Truely times have changed and an explanation is needed to understand the formation of the Twin Germanic Kingdoms of Denmark-Holland.

The Netherlands and Denmark share similar fates in the first half of the twentieth century. Due to their neutrality in World War I, they were safe from the devastation that characterized the war. Both flourished during the Inter-War period but fell under the lustful gaze of Nazi Germany and its imposing military might. Denmark lasted only six hours and Netherlands only doing a bit better by lasting a bit better at four days. They witnessed the atrocities comitted by the Nazi occupiers and division on whether to join or rebel. After the fall of Nazi Germany and the collapse of the United States, the two States found themselves in possession of German land to occupy as America was clearly no longer up to the task. Denmark administered the regions of Schleswig-Holstein, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the eastern half of Lower Saxony and the city of Hamburg; the Netherlands oversaw the western half of Lower Saxony, Bremen, and North Rhine Westphalia. The two nations, each speaking a Germanic language, found eachother as the ally needed to ensure their survival and to effectively administer occupied Germany. Through their teamwork, they were able to consolidate their zone of occupation and expand it south down to Saarland. Queen Juliana of the Netherlands and King Frederick IX of Denmark found themselves working with eachother throughout the early months of post war and encouraged their respective governments to enter into a union to better protect their people from outside threats while also developing Germany under their watchful eye.

"Henceforth the kingdoms of the Netherlands and Denmark and their German territory shall be united under one flag and one God. The Royal families of Orange-Nassau and Gl├╝cksburg shall vow to defend each other against all attempts to conquer the crowns, the nation and the people."

~ Queen Juliana of the Netherlands
~.King Frederick IX of Denmark
