Unlikely Encounter

Post by PresidentDavid on Wed Aug 10, 2016 11:46 pm

Thunder rocked the skies of the open sea as the HLS Phantom endured mighty waves and powerful winds. The crew was on-deck, as was the captain. They knew they were close to land, but with the darkened skies, they couldn't see the stars. The Phantom was a tall ship with three large sails, and no engine or other mans or propulsion. While there were not many merchant ships from Sleepy Hollow, most of them were steam-powered. However, every now and again one could come across a ship with only the wind to bring her around the world. The clouds were starting to part in the west, and the sun slowly began to rise in the east.

"LAND HO!" a boy shouted from one of the masts. The seas were starting to calm, but they weren't out of the woods yet. For another half-hour, they sailed towards what turned out to be a massive harbor. By the time they were inside of it, the sky was somewhat overcast, but the sun was out. The captain, Jean Leroy, was hoping they were in Tokyo harbor, but for all he knew, they could be off two-hundred miles north or west.

Merchant ships out of Sleepy Hollow were rare to begin with, but any making the voyage to Asia was effectively unheard of. With the collapse of global trade, Leroy felt that there were luxury products in Asia that people back in Sleepy Hollow, and perhaps even the former United States, would pay handsomely for. He didn't speak a word of Japanese, and neither did any of his crew except for his first mate: Harvey Farmer. He was in the United States Marine Corps during the war, and spent all of his time fighting in the Pacific where he learned Japanese and enough Mandarin Chinese to ask for directions. He was probably one of only a handful of people to speak Japanese that lived in Sleepy Hollow.

The ship sailed to the back of the harbor and eventually managed to dock and drop anchor in an open space of the port. While it had no radio on board, it was at least flying the tricolor of Sleepy Hollow. Captain Leroy, like most other Hollowers, felt uncomfortable outside of Sleepy Hollow, but his job required him to get use to it. However, being in Asia and not speaking the native tongue was something her certainly wasn't accustomed to. He could speak English, French, and Latin, but he didn't even understand the alphabet of the Japanese. He hoped they were willing to trade.

Captain Leroy wore his formal captain's uniform with gold tassels, a front-to-back cocked hat, black trimmed pants, boots, and an orange ribbon which was rewarded to him by the Sleepy Hollow Customs Service for the "extraordinary economic services" he provided to the barony. While most of the crew stayed on the ship, Captain Leroy and his first mate made their way to the merchants exchange building to declare their arrival and see what goods were in port, and any advice if they were to actually go barter with other merchants in the city themselves.

Most likely it was the fact that the ship was made out mostly of wood and hardly seen as a serious threat, that it was not immediatly engaged by shore batteries or the ships stationed at Yokosuka near the entrance of the bay. Instead, most of the locals, military and civil alike, wondered what the strange ship was that entered their harbour, flying what seemed to be an old Russian flag. Although, the more knowledgeable among the Japanese knew that the Russian naval jack actually looked different.

As the ship however did not respond to any radio'd inquiries, the Japanese Navy sent a welcoming party, made up of a detachment of the Naval Land Forces, to meet the crew of the ship and get answers, once they made landfall. Because the first thing the foreigners would learn, was that the Japanese had laws just like any other civilised country and that one couldn't just sail in here like Commodore Perry.
