Welcome To The RolePlay! Empty Welcome To The RolePlay!

Welcome to the RP!

If you're new, then you've made it to the right place. This is where you will sign-up so that you can quickly begin playing the game. Novus RP is a combination of Nation-RP and Character-RP where players are allowed to choose territory, or a real-life nation, and create their own government and leaders to become a formidable superpower, or reclusive principality; the choice is yours. To learn more about the game, we ask that you read our Rules and our Charter to understand the mechanics. This can seem overwhelming at first, so if you find yourself lost, join the community channel, #Novus on the IRC ColdFront network, and someone there can help you.

Before you sign-up and begin playing, we ask that you first read our Charter and the Rules which can be found here:
Charter - https://nationrp.rpg-board.net/t14-the-charter
Rules - https://nationrp.rpg-board.net/t13-game-rules

After reading the Charter and Rules, please answer these few questions, and we can get you on your way to RPing.

Do you know how to use IRC so that you can chat with other players?
Have you ever done nation-RP before?
If so, where?
How did you find us?
Questions?

Once you answer these questions, a GM will respond as soon as possible to allow you access to all of our forums. After you are approved, check out the OOC forums and search the map-thread for a place to RP - white space is available to new players.

Backstory

In 1929, the world seemed to recover from the shocks of the Great War and reach new levels of affluence, when the Great Depression set in. Within months, stock markets crashed, industrial production slowed and international trade was effectively halved. The US, where the Great Depression originated, saw unemployment soar like never before, as the federal government and the Federal Reserve not too effectively tried to bring the economy back on track. Although President Hoover's voluntarism seemed to have some minor positive effects, slowing the decline, his measures ultimatively failed to achieve recovery, even in his second term. Instead, the US was further plagued by the Dust Bowl and increasing social tensions which by now even saw open clashes in the streets between radicalised segments of society and the police forces.

Concerning was however also the international situation. 1931, while the United States economy was still in steep decline, the Japanese Kwantung Army seized Manchuria from local warlords following an alleged act of sabotage against the South Manchurian Railway and established a satelite state under the former Chinese Emperor Pu-Yi. Unable to do much more, the Hoover Administration adopted the Stimson Doctrine, refusing to ackowledge the facts Japan was creating on the ground. Japan would leave the League of Nations in 1933.

In Europe, meanwhile, 1933 saw the victory of the Nazi party in Germany. Controversial due to their anti-democratic character, most governments simply accepted the new German leadership, which seemed hardly different from the other Central and Eastern European autocracies and which at least seemed to be able to stabilise the German economy. While Adolf Hitler at times made harsh comments, blaming Jews, communists and minorities of all kinds for the country's miserable situation, it was dismissed as empty rethoric mostly.

By 1937, the Japanese Empire, emboldened by their Manchurian success, embarked on its next militarist adventure, following the a number of incidents and armed clashes over the previous years. After a very small scale shooting between Japanese soldiers and unknown opponents on the Marco Polo Bridge in Beiping, Japan used this newest incident to assault the city and extort further concessions from the Republic of China, which had already enough problems keeping their country together. Knowing that acquiscience to Japanese terms would be political suicide and unwilling to further compromise the Chinese position, the Kuomintang government chose to reject any Japanese terms and what was intented to be one more short campaign would become the largest conflict the Japanese Empire saw in its entire history.

Emerging from the ruins of Tsarist Russia, the Soviet Union was a giant on clay feet, large in size, but with a largely ineffective military, an agricultural economy, little means of exerting power and isolated on the international stage. Following the early years under Lenin, Stalin managed to win the power struggle following Lenin's death and established a totalitarian regime of proportions the world had not yet seen. Ambitious to see the Soviet Union secured and strong, an industrialisation program was started, which created an industrial base at the cost of millions of lives, the Soviet military was modernised to become one of the technologically most advanced forces in the world and treaties were concluded with neighbours, breaking the diplomatic blockade and establishing the USSR as a proper actor in world politics. Following these successes, Stalin however grew distrustful of those who could harbour ambitions of overthrowing the Soviet state... or himself as leader of the Soviet Union and in 1937, the Red Army was purged of much of its leadership. While celebrated as a cleansing of the armed forces to keep them loyal, the Red Army would suffer tremendously from it. Still, minor successes were achieved in 1939, in the Far East against the Japanese (leading to a Non-aggression pact between the two countries) and in Poland, following an alliance of convenience with the Third Reich.

Germany had flaunted the Treaty of Versailles more or less openly for years and the Nazis pretty much renounced the treaty completely. Refusing to pay reparations, reinstituting conscription, re-militarising the Rhineland, they used the reluctance of the Entente to challenge them. In 1938, the Third Reich started to undermine its neighbours, annexing Austria in March and the Sudetenland following the Munich Dictate in September. In 1939, the rest of Czechoslovakia was dismembered into a satelite Slovakia and the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. Counting on Western appeasement to continue, Hitler concluded a pact with Stalin and turned to Poland, which was jointly invaded by its two largest neighbours in September. However, by this time, the United Kingdom and France had viewed appeasement as failed and decided to assist the Poles. Although Poland could not withstand the overwhelming strength of its neighbours for long, another major war had started in Europe.

Although the Western allies had pledged to assist Poland, they mostly took a defensive stance, which would lead to the so called Phony War, as neither side committed to any large offensive. Only after Poland was defeated, did the Wehrmacht turn west and in 1940, a large-scale invasion of the Benelux countries was started to circumvent the French Maginot line of fortifications. Despite few instances of valourous defence, German forces overwhelmed the Dutch and Belgian forces and managed to surprise the French and British via a daring offensive through the Ardennes, cutting off much of the French Army. Within weeks, the French forces were beaten back and the French government sued for peace. Britain, where Neville Chamberlain was replaced by Winston Churchill as Prime Minister, would carry on the fight on its own, going as far as taking out the French fleet at Mers-el-Kébir, to avoid it falling into German hands.

After abandonning plans to invade Britain following a fierce air battle that Germany lost and successful campaigns against Denmark, Norway, Yugoslavia and Greece, 1941, the Wehrmacht, together with its allies launched Operation Barbarossa, an all-out attack on the Soviet Union. After the Soviet Union had won the Winter War, but had been humbled by the numerically and technologically inferior Finns, German leadership believed in Hitler's own words, that if they "kicked in the front door, the whole system would come crashing down". And indeed, the Red Army fared even worse than the Polish and French forces, losing massive amounts of ground, as their leadership structures were still paralysed by the purges of the previous years.

Japan meanwhile clashed with the US over the still ongoing "China Incident", which by now had become an all-out total war, with the IJA occupying large parts of Eastern China. News of atrocities and even attacks on Americans (such as the Panay Incident) cause President Hoover to take an increasingly harsh stance against the Japanese aggression and culminating in a Oil embargo in 1941 under his successor John Nance Garner, who had had an easy time defeating Hoover in 1940. Seemingly faced with the choice of losing the war in China, to which Japan had committed hundreds of thousands of soldiers or to withdraw peacefully and lose face, two choices both equally unpalatable to the Japanese leadership, the least bad solution was taken, the third option of breaking the ABCD line forcefully. At the beginning of December 1941, as the Japanese invaded the Dutch East Indies and Philippines from Indochina which had been taken over from France, the Japanese Mobile Force of six fleet carriers and dozens of additional ships launched a surprise attack on Pearl Harbour, wrecking havoc on the US Navy battleships stationed there and dragging the United states into war. Acknowledging that he could no longer keep the US out of the global war, President Garner declared war on Germany and began his cooperation with the United Kingdom and the USSR. While the economy seemed to stabilise for once, Garner performed little better economically than Hoover, and the sudden war, even if started by Japan, was blamed on his misguided policies and was viewed by many as a distraction from the domestic situation, which was still grave.

The Red Army would finally halt the Wehrmacht at the gates of Moscow, though by now, the USSR was deeply shaken. Fearful of the detained officers, which could be freed and become collaborators with Germany, Stalin had ordered the liquidation of purged officers. New officers slowly adapted to lessons learned and the ressources of the USSR were vast, but throughout 1942, the front barely moved, as it ran from Finland to the Black Sea, across Eastern Europe. Only from 1943 onwards, the Red Army managed to launch counter-offensives, which however were limited in their scope, as they could not crush the Wehrmacht decisevely. Over the years, with monumental losses of life, the Soviets pushed the Germans back across Eastern Europe at a painstakingly slow pace.

In the Pacific meanwhile, after some early successes of the Japanese, most notably the destruction of the British forces in the Far East and some more modest successes in the Battle of the Coral Sea, the decisive US victory at Midway brought an end to the Japanese advance, as it could not hope to compensate for the loss of four fleet carriers (making up 2/3 of its large carrier forces). Outproduced by the US, the Japanese were slowly driven back in an island hopping campaign, until by 1945, Americans had managed to come all the way to Okinawa and tried to systematically bomb the Japanese into submission. Although the Japanese Navy was utterly devasted by the Battle of Leyte Gulf, the destruction of a suicide force in Operation Ten-Go and the bombing of Kure, taking out what remained of the Japanese Navy, Japan refused to surrender. Although bombing raids laid waste to many Japanese cities, major amphibious operations against Japan proper were not conducted, as the bulk of US troops was still needed in Europe and Japanese kamikaze squadrons, established to defend the Home Islands, made it too risky to get close to Japan. While the IJA fought on in China, increasing US support for the Chinese, together with the difficult supply route via the Tsushima Strait and Korea turned the favours on the continent. By 1946, the Chinese were already advancing, by 1947, after the Battle of Kaifeng allowed the Chinese a breakthrough, compromising the remaining Japanese positions in China, the Japanese government sued for peace. While fighting continued, over the course of months, an agreement was worked out, with Japan releasing its overseas holdings and withdrawing from China and the territories it had occupied since 1895. Although seen as lenient towards Japan, Washington took the terms, as by now the situation at home had grown dangerous to the point of almost open rebellion and Garner hoped to at least appease some at home with the victory over the Axis.

In Europe, meanwhile, the Third Reich, although it became increasingly obvious that it was going to be defeated, held out, thanks to its experienced troops, which slowly got whittled down on three fronts, following Operation Husky and Operation Overlord. The Nazi structures slowly broke down the structures of the state and the regime's policies became ever more radical, leading to the "Endlösung", the organised mass murder of millions of "undesirables". Although the Führerprinzip remained absolute, Hitler mostly became delusional, emboldened by rare successes and the complicated situation in the USSR and the US, where domestic actors were critical of the bloody wars, or at least of their incompetent leaders who made them even more bloody than they should have been. With Hitler's death of a stroke in May 1947, power struggles set in and the Wehrmacht collapses entirely. After the Allies meet up on the 16th of June 1947, the Third Reich surrenders unconditionally and is no more.

As hostilities seem to conclude, however, chaos continues. Although the Soviet Union was victorious, parts of the parts of the USSR and newly occupied territories erupt into open revolt, blaming Stalin's excessive terror for over 30 million dead. The US itself fragments, as the Great Depression still lingers and many feel alienated from the Union. In China, the IJA withdraws, as soldiers want to return home and the population is restless, causing a power vacuum that quickly devolves in a continuation of the civil war. And in Europe... a continent lies in tatters, devastated by years of war and brutality, now left to its own devices, to struggle for itself.

The 20th century seemed unprecedented in its destruction and chaos, yet, we now enter 1948, and we are only about to conclude the first half. What will await us in the decades to come? Destruction? Reconstruction? Hope? Despair? Who knows?

The Manhattan Project failed. Noone gets nukes at start.

Welcome! I am PDF, and I'm happy to have you aboard. It's a little late right now, so not many people are on, but I recommend that you check out the OOC section, read over the rules, and request a place to RP. (The beginning section of the Game Rules should give you some clear guidance on how to get started). In case I didn't tell you before, we have an IRC channel on the Coldfront server called #Amaranthine Not many are on right now, but that should change as the morning fast approaches.

As PD has stated earlier, do feel free to check out the OOC section and read the rules and supplemental material, and request a place to RP in. Will probably see more activity during the day time, so it's a bit slow around this time of night but regardless, welcome!
